About Our Superintendent

Dr. Jo Moccia
Since 2011, Dr. Josephine (Jo) Moccia has been superintendent of the South Whidbey School District. Over the past 32 years, Jo served as a school psychologist, principal, director of special education, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent, and superintendent. She received her doctorate at Seton Hall University. She has presented at educational conferences and trainings. She was a regular presenter at Albany Law School for the school's Civil Rights and Disabilities Law Project. Jo comes from an education family: her father was a professor of law and taxation, her sister a school principal, her niece a school speech pathologist, and both her daughter and son in law are teachers in Seattle.

Having visited South Whidbey initially for her daughter's wedding, Jo happily came to Whidbey Island to serve as superintendent. This has allowed her to live close to her family, including her grandson who lives in West Seattle! Please feel free to contact her by email at [email protected]. For appointments, please contact her administrative assistant, Kristy Macarro at [email protected] or 360-221-6808 ext. 2245.

Jo Unity Day

Letter from Jo....
Welcome to the South Whidbey School District. Our District is committed to creating a new era of student achievement. Pursuing our goal to have all of our graduates career, college and culturally ready by the time they leave us is our 'Job #1'. As we enter the school year we are continuing to focus our efforts on equity and inclusivity for all students and staff.  This year we will have doubled down on our goal to pursue the highest standards possible for instruction and student success.

Our district is housed on two campuses on picturesque South Whidbey Island. Our elementary program, serving students in grades K-6, is located on the North/South Elementary campus. Our secondary program for grades 7-12 is located on our South Whidbey High school campus. We are pleased to be able to provide core academics which not only include Math, English and Social Studies but art, music, PE, laboratory science classes and electives as well. Languages other than English is offered at the high school level. We have a full complement of athletics for students in grades 7-12

How we accomplish this important work of educating students is what makes us unique. Our students are exposed to many creative learning opportunities. For example, in addition to classrooms and lab classes, students learn about science with hands-on garden work through our school farm. The farm produces food for our cafeterias. In addition to art classes, students are exposed to the arts by accomplished artists from within the community. We are all fortunate to live in a small, safe community, while also able to compete at the State level in athletics. Students outperform other district in events such as Knowledge Bowl, Band and various musical competitions. Our professional teaching staff is dedicated to achieving student curriculum goals.  We offer one to one technology and opportunity for independent study.

Our students leave us bound for top notch colleges all over the country and within the state of Washington. They find themselves well prepared and able to compete nationally. Please feel free to explore our website and visit our schools.

Thanks, Jo
