An Introduction to School Meals

The National School Lunch & Breakfast Program is a federally funded program providing nutritionally balanced meals to children. The USDA administers the program at the federal level. School districts that choose to participate in the program receive financial assistance for each meal they serve. In return they must serve meals that meet the federal nutritional requirements and offer free or reduced priced meals to eligible children. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) are designed to promote the health and well-being of children by providing nutritious meals to children.

Breakfast & Lunch

A Better Way to Start Your Day
Studies show that children who eat breakfast perform better in school and have improved behaviors. A recent study by Chartwells and Duke University that examined students' fruit and vegetable consumption around breakfast found that positive reinforcement, combined with parental involvement at home, increases fruit and vegetable consumption by students in schools.

With Chartwells, students can choose from several delicious on-the-go breakfast items such as specialtyflatbreads and popovers, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit pizza and more.

Breakfast promotional materials are also hung around the cafes encouraging students to “Rise & Shine with Breakfast” and providing tips on nutritious and delicious breakfast options to help their start their day the right way.

Delicious Is What's For Lunch

Lunches in our cafes are ideal for every palate and every age group and we're bringing students' favorite foods from outside school inside, including fresh local fruits and vegetables, pizza, classic All-American burgers and foods with Asian flair and bold, BBQ flavors. All of our food is made with care and utilizes lean meats, low-fat cheeses and whole grains.

A school lunch consists of an entrée (grain & meat/meat alternative), fruit, vegetable and milk. At the elementary school students have a choice of two different entree's, the secondary schools have a choice of one out of eight different entree's. Students are required to take a minimum of an 3 components, one being a fruit or vegetable. If the student does not take the minimum meal requirements, the lunch is considered "ala carte" and does not qualify as a free or reduced lunch. At all schools we encourage students to make healthy food choices. Each school has a Salad Bar filled with and assortment of salads, fruits and vegetables. The Salad Bar is self-service to allow students to take larger portions of their favorite fruits and vegetables. Whole grains are an important part of our menus.

Milk Substitute

USDA regulations and South Whidbey school district policy allow the following alternative to milk to be served:

  1. Pacific Natural Ultra Soy Milk, Vanilla, a USDA-approved soy milk, for children who are allergic to cow's milk or when cultural, religious, or ethical reasons eliminate cow's milk consumption.

Please NOTE: The USDA does not allow water or juice as milk substitutions. We are therefore unable to serve them in place of milk, even if a physician's order is provided.

To make arrangements for your child to be served one of our available milk substitutions, please send a written request to your child's school nurse. The written request should include:

  1. Your child's name, grade, and teacher;
  2. Which product you would like your child to receive (soy milk); and
  3. A parent or guardian's signature

SWSD Meal Charge Procedure

In the event that a student does not have money to purchase lunch for the day, we have developed a Meal Charge option.

Meal Payment Options

Payments are not accepted from July 1 - August 15

We are now accepting ONLINE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS for student meal purchases. TO MAKE PAYMENTS select the option on the right side of this page. Students still have the opportunity to prepay for the meals they purchase by sending cash or check (made payable to your students school) to their respective schools. You will need to provide your students full name on the check or envelope when making payment to their account. Elementary students may place their lunch payments in the mail box that is provided by the main office. Secondary students must hand the payment to the cashier in the cafeteria. Money received is placed on your student's dining account and as meals and other items are purchased, the cost will be appropriately deducted.

Bullying Prevention
Chartwells K12 and Prevent Child Abuse America have teamed up to take on bullying where it can commonly take place - in the café and online. Targeted bullying prevention and intervention training has been conducted with thousands of Chartwells K12 associates, giving our teams the tools and knowledge to prevent bullying while also making our teams more comfortable in taking action when they see bullying behaviors.

To expand on this effort, Chartwells K12 and Prevent Child Abuse America partnered with Hampton Creek to launch #JustStandUp - a social campaign promoting positive online behaviors and building upstanders - instead of bystanders! - among students in and outside of school.
